Thirty-seven cuts drawn from more than 20 countries, and yet this collection barely scratches the surface of women's performances around the world -- as with the first collection, Global Divas, Asia is hardly represented while North and Central America predominate, with Africa close behind. One has to wonder about the track selection, too -- on Global Divas the true oddity is a track by Marlene Dietrich, while Divine Divas presents the listener with Patsy Cline's "Walking Past Midnight," Dagmar Krause with Bertholt Brecht's "Die Moritat von Mackie Messer" and Ani DiFranco with her deconstructed "Amazing Grace." We are thus presented with quite a bit of room for improvement in a collection that's a little more than merely okay (there is some fine music on display here.) There is more to this world than meets the ear on this set -- on a set entitled Divine Divas there are no artists such as Lisa Thiel, Kay Gardner and Gaia's Voice, to point to a tiny sample of U.S. artists. Europe seems well-represented, though Russia appears to be absent; no samples of Hong Kong or Japanese pop, nothing from Maylasia, Cambodia, Viet Nam -- in short, this is a very conservative (if enjoyable) collection and could have stretched out quite a bit more than it did. ~ Steven McDonald
