Booklist Review

Gr. 7^-12. The People Who Make History series profiles the handful of men and women who changed the course of history and had a lasting impact on the world. Featuring essays by noted historians and contemporary writers, each anthology examines an individual's early life and influences, political and social ideology, contributions or misdeeds, and place in history. The essays are supplemented by an appendix of primary source documents that provide examples of the subject's speeches and writings as well as insights from friends and contemporaries. Adolf Hitler focuses on Hitler's effect on the German people and his responsibility for World War II and the Holocaust. Martin Luther King, Jr. chronicles King's role in the Civil Rights movement, the formulation of his philosophy of love and brotherhood, and his dedication to nonviolence. An annotated table of contents, discussion questions, a chronology, and a reading list add to each book's value, but it is the diversity of source materials that will make books in the series particularly useful. Martin Luther King, for example, includes excerpts from Stokely Carmichael's Black Power and Coretta Scott King's My Life with Martin Luther King, Jr. Highly recommended. --Mary Romano Marks

School Library Journal Review

Gr 9 Up-A concise introduction, "Adolf Hitler and His Legacy of Destruction," is followed by 16 essays, most of which have been excerpted from adult books. The selections are organized into sections devoted to exploring Hitler's early life and influences, his rise in power and its effects on the German people, World War II and the Holocaust, and his historical impact. Appendixes include discussion questions for each chapter, excerpts from speeches and original documents, a lengthy chronology, and an extensive list of materials for further research. More scholarly than Dennis Wepman's Adolf Hitler (Chelsea, 1987), this title could be used in tandem with any book on the period for an in-depth look at this complex figure.-Barbara Jo McKee, Streetsboro Senior High, OH (c) Copyright 2010.
