Booklist Review

McNeill's page-turning, vividly realistic soap opera, set in 1959 Bombay, blends the viewpoints of diverse, beautifully crafted characters. Wealthy Baby Maling-Smith has just returned to India after a visit to England, where her lover has married, leaving her heartbroken. Intellectual and newly married Dee Carmichael is trying to adjust to marriage and life in a foreign country with servants and no money. Divinely handsome Dennis Gillies has arrived from Australia to take up his duties as a passport clerk, and he already hates Bombay. Carole, a half-caste, is trying to snare a white husband by any means necessary. And Shadiv is a married Indian movie actor. McNeill skillfully ensnares each of her complex characters in a web of well-developed story lines involving love affairs, betrayals, blackmail, fantasy, and irrepressible hope, finally bringing everything to a satisfying climax that leaves no loose ends. --Diana Tixier Herald
