Choice Review

Langford (Univ. of Lancaster, UK) presents an eloquent treatise about the delusions of love and how romantic and/or married relationships can reinforce gender-biased methods of power and control. Langford argues that rather than providing an escape from such undesired life conditions, romantic love may perpetuate negative cycles. Those who endeavor to find self-meaning in devotion to another risk losing their own identity. The author applies this theory to abusive relationships. She also discusses a study in which women who felt extremely disappointed from a prior love relationship had significantly lower self-confidence and self-esteem scores--feelings that made the women vulnerable for "falling in love" to temporarily make themselves feel better. Highly recommended for libraries supporting psychology courses on gender and women's studies at the upper-division undergraduate level and above and for professionals working with marriages and families.
