Booklist Review

Spurge moved her way up from the secretarial pool at the Drexel Burnham Lambert investment house, where she had worked for nearly 20 years, to become a senior junk-bond executive and protegeof Michael Milken, but she resigned shortly after the discredited Milken left the firm in 1989. She then founded Knowledge Exchange, a publishing firm that released a series of profiles of companies that Milken had backed called "Portraits of the American Dream." Spurge, though, also put together the highly regarded Knowledge Exchange Business Encyclopedia (1997) and is the author of Failure Is Not an Option: How MCI Invented Competition in Telecommunications (1997). Having also worked as a consultant and appearing frequently on the financial talk show circuit, Spurge is nothing if not a survivor--which certainly qualifies her to offer this compendium of financial advice. Simple yet savvy, her year's worth of tips runs the gamut from kids' allowances to estate planning. --David Rouse
