Summary

Summary

In this completely revised and updated look at Mars, award-winning science writer Seymour Simon takes young astronomers on an unforgettable tour of the red planet. He examines old beliefs about bug-eyed monsters and "canals, " as well as the newest discoveries by recent Mars Global Surveyor and Pathfinder space missions. Breathtaking NASA photographs highlight some of the spectacular physical features of the Martian surface. "Destination: Mars is a great introduction to one of our nearest neighbors in space--a planet scientists hope we will one day explore in person.

Booklist Review

Gr. 3^-5. This revised edition of Simon's book Mars (1987) includes new pictures from the Mars Orbiter Camera, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Pathfinder lander, all launched since the publication of the earlier volume. The text also reflects NASA missions that gathered information about Mars in the late 1990s. In the same handsome format as Simon's other books on the planets, this volume offers a timely update of knowledge and speculation about the red planet. --Carolyn Phelan
