Choice Review

Photographer and archivist Cohen has compiled what appears to be a complete biobibliography of Ochs (1940-76), one of the preeminent singer/songwriters of the 1960s. The brief biography hits the highlights, summarizing the more complete story in Michael Schumacher's There but for Fortune: The Life of Phil 0chs (CH, Feb'97). Cohen divides the bulk of the book into (mostly chronological) categories: writings by Ochs, writings about Ochs, album reviews, concert reviews, interviews, Ochs discography, tapes, film and video, songs, covers of songs, musical tributes, and a concert list. Cohen covers the full range of Ochs's musical and literary contributions and the continuing, indeed increasing, interest in his life and music. This reviewer cannot think of anything that has been left out. This research guide will serve as the starting point for any future studies of the exciting, complex life and times of Phil Ochs. Highly recommended (despite very sloppy editing) for libraries with such an interest. R. D. Cohen; Indiana University Northwest
