School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-8-This brief but inclusive biography is also a parallel introduction to the causes and major events of the Civil War. The well-organized text is clear and readable, with short, simply constructed sentences. Well-designed half-page sidebars explain important terms or events such as "popular sovereignty," and "54-40 or Fight." Direct quotations from the subject's personal letters and his wife's memoirs appear throughout the well-documented presentation as do well-chosen illustrations and maps. Robert R. Potter's Jefferson Davis (RSVP, 1993) has more extensive coverage, but no footnotes or citations, and focuses on Davis's controversial nature as one who stubbornly refused to ask for a pardon or pledge his allegiance to the United States. Both titles are useful additions to biography collections.-Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, TX (c) Copyright 2010.
