Choice Review

HarperCollins has produced many international field guides in recent years; with this compact field book they offer a new format called the "illustrated checklist." Here the goal is to provide only critical identification information for more than 1,200 species of birds in a small guide, for the bird-watcher who travels to any of the ten countries of southern Africa. The format of this little (5 x 7.5 in.) reference by van Perlo is a set of 84 color plates illustrating all the species with small but adequate paintings. (Plates are dense with ten to 20 species portraits each). Opposite all plates is appropriate species text with very brief notes for identification (e.g., habitats and songs). A separate section of the book has compact range maps showing the geographic distribution of each species (because of their small size these maps are best studied with a magnifying lens). The author has been successful in making the smallest and by far the lightest usable bird guide for this important region. What has been sacrificed, necessarily, is illustration size and all but the briefest text. General readers; professionals. C. Leck; Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick
