Anyone using a hearing aid or listening to a modern acoustic system benefits from critical technology developed by Hugh Knowles. A young "hacker" who helped develop household radio in the 1920s, Knowles became an early leader in "scientific engineering" and introduced rigorous technical standards and professional research and testing techniques into electro-acoustic technology. His claim to popular attention, however, was a tiny "off the shelf" microphone, costing only $15, aboard the Mars Polar Lander. Media interest in Knowles vanished in December 1999 when the spacecraft crashed on the Martian surface. With the unanticipated loss of its popular audience, this biography has a poor "impedance match" with its remaining technical audience. Goodwillie concentrates on Knowles's character and his dysfunctional personal life; technical readers will want more information than is provided on the evolution of his technical contributions. Knowles's life was often exciting (as a child, he was caught up in the violence of the Mexican Revolution, and was later a consultant to Al Capone) and eventually technically and financially fruitful, but Goodwillie fails to show why it was exemplary, and so weakens the book's relevance for college libraries. General readers. G. E. Herrick; Maine Maritime Academy
