Trade edition: Original pictorial cream colored boards, with cloth backstrip. Cover title lettered in tan "Done in the open : drawings / by Frederick Remington." A later Russell issue has cover title in blue lettering, with the author's name corrected to "Frederic."

Contains 12 double-page illustrations (1 col.), 29 single-page illustrations and numerous sketches. Col. ill. has caption title, "Caught in the circle ... , " printed in blue and red.

ViU has one copy in oblong cardboard box (30 x 44 cm.), as issued. Box has ill. of "The cow puncher" and title "Done in the open / by Frederic Remington" on top. Pasted inside boxtop is a printed label which repeats the title, followed by "Printed in October of 1902. Price $5.00 net." A printed slip which is laid in the book reads "We desire to correct the statement that all of the text of 'Done in the Open' was prepared by Mr. Owen Wister. The Publisher."
