Summary

TheEnglish for New Americansprogram uses an immersion approach, thus enabling students to use English much as they would in real life while providing them with the tools and support they need to understand and participate in everyday situations. This approach also makes the program accessible to learners of any language background. Teaches "real" language necessary to participate in important everyday situations. The medium of video provides an added dimension to learning. Learners see the language being spoken. Through gestures, expressions, and context, learners can readily comprehend and imitate. Accessible to native speakers of any language. As ideal for Spanish speakers as it is for speakers of Korean, Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese, etc. Includes many interviews with real people who discuss their lives and habits in the United States. Library Journal Review

Living Language presents a course in basic English and life skills for new arrivals to the United States in this new series, each volume of which consists of a 60-minute videotape, a 60-minute audiotape with transcription, and a workbook. The program follows a cast of ethnically diverse characters making their way through realistic scenarios such as visiting a doctor or enrolling a child in school, using an immersion method for accessibility to speakers of any language. The scenarios are enhanced through a variety of useful exercises in the workbook and on the audiotape. Focusing on comprehension and confidence-building, the series also includes features such as unrehearsed live interviews to illustrate English as it's spoken "on the street" and in various accents. The series succeeds because of the diversity of exercises, presentations, and course materials. The videos are engaging and user-friendly, with helpful graphical features and narration to assist the user, while the workbooks provide exercises to help students master the vocabulary and grammar. Highly recommended for all ESL collections. (Libraries concerned about used or missing workbooks should note that additional copies are available for $9.95 each.)--Amy E. Cant£, Ann Arbor Dist.
