Booklist Review

Two excellent sources of new ideas for home decorators who want to try something different. Bethmann and Fox's book is the more "crafty" of the two. The authors' goal is to help you give your home that rustic look with the creative use of the simplest of materials: twigs. Introductory material offers tips on how to gather twigs, transport them, and bind or glue them. Specific projects include all manner of both decorative and functional objects (potted-plant trellises, baskets, blotters, mirrors, and shelves). More complex projects include log-cabin dollhouses and dollhouse furniture. A good source of ideas for the rustically inclined craftsperson. Skinner's text is a more ambitious primer on using paint to produce creative design effects. Painted walls, floors, furniture, fabrics, and garden implements are all covered, and the range of unusual uses for simple paint ranges from stucco-plaster effects as wall treatments to painted geometric borders on wood floors to harlequin cupboards and handpainted curtains. Throughout, the authors supply detailed instructions as well as helpful and attractive four-color illustrations. Although designed to be used by do-it-yourselfers, this idea-rich volume is likely to be of equal interest to home decorators who plan to use professional painters. --Ilene Cooper
