Booklist Review

This tricky subject is tackled with aplomb by someone who should know: Gelb is the author of several self-published personal finance books, and through planning as well as trial and error, he has developed an effective system of promoting his products, largely through seminars. The idea of working with bookstores to organize seminars around the concept of your book (this works extremely well with nonfiction, how-to volumes) is preferable to, say, a typical book signing, where people are expected to know who you are already. Instead, a seminar allows the bookstore to promote the event and the book's concept to an audience more likely to buy because it's interested in the subject matter. As Gelb says, the object of such an event is to sell books, and he breaks down each step, from how to maintain enthusiasm to how to design the actual seminar presentation. This attention to detail, along with a straightforward but playful style, makes this the definitive how-to on book promotion. --Joe Collins
