Summary

Summary

Accurate, reliable, comprehensive information about dentistry. Dental First Aid For Families is, first of all, a serious book about what to do during a dental emergency. It will help a baby with teething pain, a teenager who knocks out a tooth, a lost cap get found, or a broken denture get fixed. There is information on chipped teeth, cut lips, canker sores, cold sores, and even bad breath. Beyond that there are stories and information about what's normal from birth through senior years, from the first teeth to dentures. Some of the ideas will save a buck, some will help the reader sleep through the night, some will reduce the pain. All of the ideas will help with healthier teeth and gums because a dentist wrote this book and that's what dentists are supposed to do.

Booklist Review

Any librarian who has had a distraught patron request a book on what to do about toothache should cheer this paperback, and if said librarian has a toothache, the cheers may be fraught with gratitude. Retired dentist Diamond delivers what the title promises: what to do when a dental problem arises and you can't soon get to a dentist. His practical, easy-to-understand advice is built on just enough basic science to put dental problems in context. His kindly sense of humor brightens the pages and lowers worry levels. Indeed, he makes clear when the sufferer shouldn't worry as well as when worry is really in order and exactly what should then be done. Near the end, he specifies what to have in a home dental first aid kit to help with minor problems and with those that can't immediately be treated by a professional. --William Beatty
