Summary

Summary

"A powerful prayer life is available to everyone, "claims author, mother of ten eight adopted children. "At age 24 1 suddenly found myself deep in the jungles of Brazil, the mother of eight children whose ages ranged from not-quite-two up to nine. But the really hard part was being married to an abusive, unfaithful missionary husband," explains Ms. Sand when describing what made her turn to prayer. "None of my academic training or experience in the church prepared me to face the rigors of jungle living under these adverse circumstances. We had no electricity for eleven of the 15 years I lived in Brazil raising my family. The missionary community was either in denial about what was happening or implied that I deserved the abuse." Discovering that God was willing to answer prayers began Ms. Sand on a wonderful odyssey of learning to trust God for the smallest details of her life in bringing up her family. In her book, Prayers of Faith: On Learning to Trust God, she points out the basic principles of prayer that anyone can use to develop a bold relationship with the Creator of the Universe.

Excerpts

Excerpts

From the Prologue: It was the Pilgrim's costume that started me on my life of prayer. I was seven that cold, blustery day when I found you could ask God for a miracle and get what you prayed for. Our family was recently back in Minneapolis after having lived in the tropics for three years, and I had just come down with measles. Today the episode seems more like "trivial pursuits," but at the time it was momentous. All I knew was that God had healed me miraculously so I could wear the Pilgrim's costume. From this tiny mustard seed experience grew a confidence that when all is said and done, God is the only One who is always there for you. "Every flower that blooms, every raindrop that falls, every breath of fresh mountain air, every sun sinking into the ocean's horizon, every child's sweet gaze, every lover's cherished touch, every day of health and strength and every hint that guardian angels surround us with protective wings--all these assure us that our lives are filled with God's mercies at a level that is beyond our most exaggerated imaginations."
