Booklist Review

Veteran anthologist Wimmer brings together the stories of golf's greatest finishes: Arnold Palmer in the 1960 U.S. Open, Ken Venturi in the 1964 U.S. Open, Jack Nicklaus in the 1986 Masters, and 17 others. Dramatic finishes are what make all sports exciting, and that is especially true of golf, where the competitive element is usually less tangible than in most team sports. The golfer competes with the course, or with him-or herself, but rarely head-to-head with another player. To capture the essence of that special form of competition takes skillful writing, and this collection boasts some of the best golf writers of the last half of the twentieth century: Herbert Warren Wind, Dan Jenkins, Thomas Boswell, John Feinstein. Along with the expected homages to golf's greatest moments, Wimmer sweetens the pot with a delightful bit of whimsy: an excerpt from Ian Fleming in which James Bond vies with Goldfinger on the links. A winning premise and first-rate writing add up to a fine anthology. --Bill Ott
