Booklist Review

Gr. 6^-9. Jimmy is a 13-year-old innocent who convinces his mother to move from their gang-riddled Chicago neighborhood to the wilderness of Oklahoma. It's there that Jimmy's Native American grandfather mentors him through his rite of passage, using philosophical discussions and physical challenges. Although the sparsely detailed plot is unpolished (Jimmy's life change occurs in one week), and Jimmy's character is too wholesome for even young readers to believe his past gang affiliations, the story moves briskly, and an unmistakably concrete moral is shared in every chapter. Haines' didactic emphasis on the traditional roles of manhood, and his decrying of today's soulless society are made palatable thanks to his effective use of the sage grandfather: with heartfelt references to his ancestors, the wise old man shares the book's vibrantly sincere theme in clear, often uplifting, terms. --Roger Leslie
