Choice Review

The Consumer Expenditure Survey, an annual study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is the basis for the Consumer Price Index. Best Customers is a handy calculation of consumer spending patterns, based on the Survey for 1997 because of the two-year time lag between data collection and release. Covering 300 individual products and services, BC identifies "best customers," who spend the most, and "biggest customers," who control the largest market share, and points out future consumer trends. Spending is analyzed by age of householder, household income, household type, and region of the country. For instance, who buys outdoor furniture? Married couples aged 45 to 54, without children but with incomes of $70,000 or more, living in the West. Trends? Increased spending on gardening equipment is likely as affluence and interest in gardening rise.
