American artist Burchfield (1893-1967) spent most of his adult life in New York City and Buffalo. This annotated bibliography, in addition to a short biographical introduction, consists of 1,450 sequentially numbered entries in various sections. The first, "Exhibition History," is arranged chronologically (1916-1991), listing place, title of exhibit, dates, and works (often titled). "Exhibition Catalogs" (section 2) is arranged alphabetically by museum, gallery, or author. In addition to bibliographical information, the annotations list paintings by Burchfield and often quote passages from the catalogs. The next two sections cite periodical articles and books with detailed annotations that list subject matter and illustrations. "Museum Collections" lists alphabetically the names, addresses, telephone numbers, and artworks held. "Non-print Media" consists of five films. The book concludes with a general index of authors, print titles, art titles, museums, and galleries. Dates are given for artworks cited, but there is no indication of media or size. This book contains much information for an important, if lesser-known, American artist. Makowski is a lifelong Buffalo resident who previously published Quilting, 1915-1983: An Annotated Bibliography (1985). Lower-division undergraduates through faculty. R. P.
