Choice Review

Kaeser (1910-90) was a photographer of the American West about whom little has been published. This well-crafted book, published in conjunction with an exhibition at the University of Notre Dame's Snite Museum of Art, reproduces 80 of Kaeser's works pulled from the collections of the museum, which is the repository of the artist's negatives and prints. Supplementing the images are an introduction and a chronology, both by Moriarty, the Snite Museum's curator of photography. This book provides a handsome showcase for Kaeser's beautiful photographic work; its text, however, does not adequately explore what historical legacy or aesthetic uniqueness this artist achieved. Kaeser's work seems to display the influence of Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Minor White, and other better-known artists with whom he was associated. Therein may be the importance of this book. Recommended for very specialized photography collections. All levels. E. H. Teague; University of Florida
