Choice Review

Herpetologist Bartlett and writer Tennant offer this follow-up volume to their similar guide, Snakes of North America. Eastern and Central Regions (CH, Oct'00). Coverage format is the same. In the introductory section, various basic areas are briefly described (e.g., scalation, locomotion, reproduction). One area that is unusually clear and accurate is the section on venom and envenomation. Considerable space is given to this subject and is strongly recommended reading even for many professional herpetologists and physicians. There are fewer taxa (158 species and subspecies versus some 200 or more) in the west than in the central and east, but the number of poisonous forms is greater. This book is well written; the maps are well done and accurate; color plates are complete and with very few exceptions, good to excellent. Brief bibliography. Strongly recommended to anyone interested in western US snakes, and to all public and academic libraries in the region covered. General readers; undergraduates through faculty. K. L. Williams; emeritus, Northwestern State University
