Booklist Review

This handy guide begins with a section on container gardening, offering plant schemes for courtyards, patios, entrances, steps, seating areas, window boxes and sills, small balconies and roofs, hanging baskets, and inside garden rooms. McGlynn gives instructions on choosing containers and what to plant in them to create an impact. The second section, "The Garden in Bloom," is an introduction to beds and borders. The author suggests an assortment of annuals, perennials, bulbs, small evergreens, flowering shrubs, and ground covers. She also recommends climbers and tall plants that can be used to create height at the back of the border. The third section, "Garden Style," deals with the elements that create the essence of the garden: informal, water features, hidden retreats, paved areas, paths, gates, arches and pergolas, raised decks, steps, walls, fences, and trellises. The final section, "Garden Themes," is filled with inspirational ideas for cottage gardens, formal flower gardens, and Oriental-style gardens. Every page of this beautiful book is in stunning color. --George Cohen

Library Journal Review

This gardening overview is divided into four sections: "The Contained Garden," "The Garden in Bloom," "Garden Style," and "Garden Themes." Subjects range from ground covers and annuals to fruit, alpine, and water gardens. But because of the sheer number of subjects included, each topic is covered in a mere two to four pages, with minimal textÄthough the many spectacular photographs show a wide variety of plants, gardens, and garden styles. Entire books are available on many of these topics, so McGlynn is only touching upon each. She concludes with lists of plants in various categoriesÄcontainer plants, border plants, trees and shrubs, etc.Äbut omits USDA hardiness zones. While this book would be useful to browsers choosing a style of garden or looking to add to established gardens, it is an optional purchase for most libraries.ÄSue O'Brien, Downers Grove P.L., IL (c) Copyright 2010.
