Reviews 1

School Library Journal Review

A useful resource by the author of Picture Books for Children (ALA, 1997). Cianciolo lists the criteria for inclusion and discusses trends in informational picture books. Subsequent chapters provide lengthy critical annotations, including recommended age levels, divided into categories such as "The Natural World," "Numbers and Arithmetic," "Peoples and Cultures," and "Arts and Crafts." The approximately 250 titles are up-to-date, and though most of them would be considered nonfiction, a handful of titles are classified as fiction or include fictionalized elements. Add this guide even if you already have Bette Ammon and Gale Sherman's Worth a Thousand Words (Libraries Unlimited, 1996) or Susan Benedict's Beyond Words (Heinemann, 1992). The currency of the selections and the focus on information make this a unique resource.-Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VA (c) Copyright 2010.
