School Library Journal Review

Gr 6 Up-There exists a variety of opinions related to environmental efforts, including the necessity of the work itself. This title provides a general introduction to the various positions in the debate and includes quotes from prominent figures in the field. History, protection and lobbying tactics, scientific assessment, and economic issues are addressed in a neutral manner. No one side is portrayed as correct, thus allowing readers to form their own opinions. Infighting, disagreements, and criticisms from within the fields may surprise some students. The final chapter examines the new forms of environmental work stemming from community action, where quality-of-life concerns unite diverse individuals. The contrasting viewpoints distinguish this title from Robin Zeff's Environmental Action Groups (Chelsea, 1993) and Elaine Landau's Environmental Groups (Enslow, 1993). Average-quality black-and-white cartoons and photographs, an extensive bibliography, a list for further reading, and a list of organizations to contact are included.-Mary B.
