School Library Journal Review

K-Gr 5-Young readers will delight in designing a "Scaly Gator," a "Swiss Cheese Candle," a "Pasta Fish," or any of the more than 60 artistic creations in this attractive book. The projects are divided into four major categories: "Playing with Patterns," "Prints Charming," "The Sculpture Gallery," and "A Touch of Texture." The directions are clear, precise, and illustrated with black-and-white diagrams and cartoons. Materials needed are basic art supplies and items easily found around the house. The complexity of each project is noted by "one paintbrush" for the most simple to "three brushes" for the most difficult. All activities are easily completed in one sitting. "Circular Weaving," a "Sandpaper Relief Print," "Crayon Batik," and a "Bean-and-Seed Pendant" are just a few of the unusual creations offered. Handy "Tricks of the Trade" and sidebars that highlight well-known artists whose works and techniques relate to particular projects appear throughout. An impressive array of creative endeavors to make, enjoy, and display.-Patricia Mahoney Brown, Benjamin Franklin Elementary School, Kenmore, NY (c) Copyright 2010.
