Booklist Review

Rowlands, who has been growing and showing dahlias for more than 30 years, begins with a brief history of this beautiful plant, which now boasts more than 20,000 varieties. One chapter describes physical characteristics, and another explains the breakdown of groups within the genus. Rowlands gives detailed instructions on cultivation, which include data on pest and disease control, watering, and storing the tubers. There are chapters on propagation, raising new varieties, and exhibitions at horticultural shows. Rowlands lists more than 400 cultivars, giving their origin when known, along with a brief description of each plant. This comprehensive guide has 70 stunning color photographs and 15 line drawings. --George Cohen
