Booklist Review

This book is out-of-date, and the author knows it. However, this also is one situation when "out-of-date" does not mean "obsolete" or "useless." Howells is hard at work updating, correcting, and expanding the electronic version daily--at the rate of approximately 1,000 new links per month. The Web site, Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet [], is a genealogist's paradise. What began on March 4, 1996, as a small set of bookmarked genealogy Web sites selected for the author's personal use, then shared with the Tacoma-Pierce County Genealogical Society, has exploded into nothing short of an electronic phenomenon. Cyndi's List has become the premier gateway for genealogical research on the Internet, providing access to more than 40,000 genealogy sites, each thoroughly researched and categorized. The print version, identical to the online version in scope, arrangement, and content, was created in response to requests from people who use the Web site regularly. It is a wonderful convenience for those researchers who like to chart their course before going online. Novices will find the Web site much more manageable when the print version is used prior to and during each electronic search. The print version allows one to see just how vast the field has become. Regardless of where one needs to begin, be it with census records, cemetery lists, oral histories, ethnic special interest groups, or ship passenger and immigration records, Cyndi's List will guide the way. Sections on Canada and the U.S. are broken down, respectively, by province and state. Europe, on the other hand, is treated more generally, as well as geographically by country or groups of countries. Regardless of the subject, the format is the same. A brief category index, somewhat like an unpaged table of contents, appears at the beginning, on the first page of each subject. Researchers can use that index to find the appropriate selection of sites to peruse. Each site has its complete Web address printed, along with occasional brief descriptions of contents, when necessary. One of the problems with the online version is the lack of a search engine to look for keywords. The publisher missed an opportunity to remedy this by including a comprehensive index in the book. Nevertheless, libraries should consider purchasing multiple copies for reference and circulating use. Genealogy libraries, especially, should consider having copies of the book located near their computers, for easy reference.

Library Journal Review

All three books provide easy access to useful genealogy sites. While Howells strives for exhaustive coverage of genealogy links, Schaefer offers very general site lists. Though Howells's book comes with a solid price tag, the purchase of each new (and planned) title in Schaefer's series would quickly rack up the same priceÄor more. Still, for those who want only a brief, focused guide, Schaefer's books are an economical alternative.ÄElaine M. Kuhn, Allen Cty. P.L., Fort Wayne, IN (c) Copyright 2010. Choice Review

Begun a little more than three years ago, Cyndi's List has become a household word among genealogical researchers of the Internet. Its availability in printed form will be a boon to family and academic historians. As its subtitle indicates, the publication lists 40,000 Internet sites. Arranged alphabetically by categories similar to its Web site with subcategories listed in similar fashion, the publication offers speedy access even for novice users. Extensive as the publication is, however--listing even the International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists--its comprehensiveness is limited by the phenomenal growth in the number of genealogical sites on the Internet; Howells notes that nearly a thousand sites are added each month. The volume is particularly useful for research in the US, since nearly 40 percent of the sites listed cover the 50 states. Listings for Central and Eastern Europe and new nations established since 1989 and for ethnic and fraternal organizations are more limited, as are those for public and private universities with significant genealogical holdings. Strongly recommended for institutions with graduate programs in the humanities as well as for historical societies. F. R. Levstik; Kentucky Department for Libraries & Archives
