Booklist Review

Gr. 11^-12. This Contemporary Issues Companion title provides an informative, thought-provoking overview of a fascinating, if disturbing topic. Articles from diverse sources, including everything from scholarly journals to People magazine, examine the characteristics of serial killers, profiling, gender factors, media influence, and Internet^-free speech issues. Prose styles and article lengths vary. Al Carlisle's "The Dark Side of the Serial-Killer Personality" is a dense, clinical study; Sabrina Rubin's "Lives Forever Changed: Surviving Serial Killer Ted Bundy" is a sympathetic, human-interest account. An introduction provides context for the issues explored, and author information is supplied for each article. Given some graphic descriptions, the book is recommended for mature readers. Those equipped to read it will find psychological, sociological, and historical perspective on some grim myths and realities. An organizations list and a bibliography are appended. --Shelle Rosenfeld
