School Library Journal Review

Gr 8 Up-This compendium consists of selections from the two-volume Encyclopedia of the Future (Macmillan, 1995). The alphabetically arranged entries cover subjects such as abortion, artificial intelligence, crime, extinction, household appliances, sexual behavior, and utopias. Most provide background on the topic and predict future developments. The articles are well written, authoritative, and incorporate the ideas and opinions of experts. Each entry has a bibliography. Clear black-and-white photographs, line drawings, and charts add visual interest to the pages. One of the most fascinating features of this volume is the "Chronology of the Future," which begins in the year 2000 and goes beyond the year 1032 and provides forecasts in medicine, the military, demographics, infotechnology, and other areas. Also included is a list of the "100 Most Influential Futurist Books." An extensive index and a complete table of contents make access easy. A great resource for finding topics for discussion, debate, or in-depth research.-Linda Wadleigh, Oconee County Middle School, Watkinsville, GA (c) Copyright 2010.
