Booklist Review

Gr. 6^-10. Part of the African-American Biographies series, these titles present two very different movers and shakers: one was a quiet, reclusive, self-taught scientist in colonial times; the other is a contemporary television personality who speaks to millions. Banneker's story discusses his brilliant scientific inventions in some detail and also his political role as a free black man in a time of slavery, who was cited by his Quaker friends and by other abolitionists as evidence that ability was not related to skin color. (Banneker's grandmother, who came from England as an indentured servant, is the subject of Alice McGill's moving picture book, Molly Bannaky, reviewed elsewhere in this issue.) Oprah's story will have immediate appeal for teens who know her from her talk show, her movies, and her powerful public presence. The biography makes clear how her empathy derives from her personal experience of poverty, loneliness, and sexual abuse as a child. With occasional black-and-white photos, the book describes Winfrey's childhood and student years and then focuses on her present role as entertainer and humanitarian, a woman who combines huge business success with an intensely spiritual life. Both books include a chronology, full chapter notes at the back, a bibliography, and Internet addresses. --Hazel Rochman
