No college sports event draws so much attention or inspires such insanity as the three weeks of "March Madness." During those three weeks, the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball tournaments whittles 64 of college basketball's best teams into one national champion. Although it attracts high-profile spectators and millions of television viewers, it is not the only tournament. From 1937 to 1998, eight national athletic associations have organized 493 national championship tournaments for men's and women's basketball, of which the NCAA tournament is only one. Additionally, in 1904, and then since 1938, nine other organizations have conducted 105 quasi-national championship tournaments. College Basketball's National Championships details every one of these tournaments. Much of the detail included in this volume cannot be found in any other published source. The tournaments are presented for each sponsoring organization by men and women, by year, and by division. All of the participating teams are listed in order of their final standing in the tournament. The entries for each team include the complete season win-loss record, the coach's name, and tournament data such as seed, region, or type of bid. Also included are lists of winners of every national champion by year, by association, and by school--plus a complete summary of results and data for all appearances of every school that ever participated in a national championship tournament. College Basketball National Championships covers -- for the first time ever, anywhere, in one publication -- every senior college national championship tournament ever played. Associations included: Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women League of Christian Colleges National Athletic Steering Committee National Bible College Athletic Association National Christian College Athletic Association National Small College Athletic Association Non-Association Tournaments Included: American Red Cross Benefit Collegiate Commissioners Tournament Nationa

Booklist Review

From the American Sports History series, a compilation of data for all 598 college basketball national championships from 1937 to 1998, including association (e.g., League of Christian Colleges, National Small College Athletic Association) and nonassociation (e.g., National Women's Invitational Tournament, Olympic Trials Tournament) tournaments.

Choice Review

Brenner has compiled the final standings of 493 association and 105 nonassociation national championship tournaments. The association tournaments include the NCAA and seven others, the nonassociation tournaments nine, such as the National Invitational Tournament. Men's and women's play in all divisions is included. Brenner lists such data as the colleges participating, region where originally seeded, final won and lost records, and the coach's name for every tournament each year. He also records after every tournament each school's participation history. Other sections include school name cross-references, school locations, tournament sites, victories later sanctioned by the NCAA, and a fascinating trivia section. The book could have been smaller had it not listed each school's participation history after every tournament, since a combined school participation history section summarizes each college's key tournament results. Some data, such as the actual scores of any game, who actually defeated whom in each tournament, and the players involved are not included. Other books, such as Encyclopedia of College Basketball (CH, Apr'95), still need to be consulted to fill these holes. Nevertheless, this volume should be very popular every March. J. A.
