Booklist Review

The growing popularity (and notoriety) of day trading has focused attention on computerized trading; but online investing is an attractive option for many investors simply because of its speed, convenience, and lower trading charges. One estimate shows that nearly 30 percent of all trading is now being done online. For those still on the sidelines, Littauer's primer is a perfect resource for helping get started. The author of other "investing the smart way" guides on stocks and mutual funds, Littauer identifies the best Internet Web sites for investors, recommends online brokers, shows how to use computer programs to "screen" for investment selections, offers tips on investing in the online environment, and warns against online scams. He compares stocks, bonds, and mutual funds as investment options; and he explains how to make online purchases of stocks through direct purchase and dividend reinvestment plans. Littauer also describes the TreasuryDirect program for purchasing government securities and showcases online mutual fund "supermarkets." And, yes, he does devote a chapter to day trading. --David Rouse
