Choice Review

In this well-illustrated book and companion compact disk, Maffit takes an eclectic look at world percussion instruments from a wide variety of styles and cultures. A percussionist, educator, and composer, Maffit has studied with master drummers from Ghana, Brazil, and Nigeria and he brings this background to this volume, making it an excellent source for students and educators of world music. The author's viewpoint is visionary, enthusiastic, and historically accurate. Unlike more scholarly references and standard textbooks, this book presents its wealth of information in a format that is readable and enjoyable to the lay reader. Yet professional musicians, composers, and arrangers can also use the book to open up their imaginations to new percussion sounds as well as for reference when needing to research the sights and sounds of these wonderful instruments. Libraries supporting courses in ethnomusicology, world music, and music appreciation will find this book/CD a valuable resource to supplement more scholarly reference works. D.
