Choice Review

Practically Speaking, the authors' fourth book of quotations, follows the pattern of the others (Mathematically Speaking, CH, Jun'99; Physically Speaking, 1997; and Statistically Speaking, CH, Jan'99). It is well indexed and easy to use, covering approximately 1,100 terms specific to the fields of engineering, technology, and architecture. Using humor and scholarship equally, this title does not attempt to be comprehensive or complete but strives to serve as both "pleasure reading" and "ready reference" for the "general reader and the experienced professional." Readers who pick any term such as "measurement" will find quotes from such diverse sources as Isaiah 40:12, John Dewey, Geoffrey Chaucer, and William Edwards Deming. Although other quotation collections may first come to mind, this is the title that should be given to selective quotation seekers, who will appreciate its fascinating content. Useful to any audience. M. A. King-Blandford University of Toledo
