Summary

Summary

For more than a century, people have attempted to harness electricity, the clean and versatile fuel, for personal transportation. With impressive technical clarity and historical insight, author Ernest Wakefield reviews these attempts in History of the Electric Automobile: Hybrid Electric Vehicles. He focuses exclusively on electric vehicles that harness the potential of electricity when combined with another energy source - hybrid electric vehicles (HEV).

The book details the historical development of capacitors, engines, flywheels, fuel cells, inductive charging, and solar cells - and the application of each to hybrid electric vehicles.

Choice Review

Wakefield's book made this reviewer recall Dickens's description in Hard Times of Thomas Gradgrind as "a man of facts and calculations." There is no flowery prose in Wakefield's History: the entries are short and fact filled, and every section is followed by a very detailed and appreciated list of references. Indeed, one of the outstanding features of this book is its documentation of the obscure, be it a vehicle, event, invention, or modification. One's guess is that it will turn out to be a resource book in which, when all else fails, one will find something about the Volvo Gas Turbine Electric Car that was otherwise elusive. There are many unique pictures, illustrations, tables, and graphs. It is well indexed and contains a useful and detailed table of contents. A valuable resource for libraries with a strong automobile collection. All levels. C. J. Myers Beaver College
