Choice Review

In this a one-of-a-kind book on the US Revenue Cutter Service in Alaska, Strobridge collects an astonishing amount of forgotten history. He recounts the US government's reluctant efforts to bring rescue, emergency relief, resupply, exploration, and law and order to Alaska in addition to its regular patrols of the region. This fascinating parade of little-known, early Coast Guard history supersedes anything written to date on the subject of Coast Guard concerns in Alaskan waters. Based on a fine array of contemporary sources, diaries, logs, journals, and all pertinent government records, the work is academically solid. It is also very well written, with 18 pages of informative notes, a six-page bibliography, and a useful index. Strobridge's book would be excellent support for a course in naval and maritime history and a fine acquisition for any public or college library. All levels. B. H. Groene; formerly, Southeastern Louisiana University
