Choice Review

A tremendous increase this decade in grants for Native American programs prompted the publisher to begin a series of profiles on grant makers, including private family foundations, community foundations, small alternative foundations, indigenous foundations, corporate foundations, corporate philanthropy programs, and religious institutions. This first in the series profiles 56 private and community foundations. All have targeted Native American programs, presented multiple grants to Native American groups in recent years, or granted large dollar amounts. Most fund in multiple states. Information was gathered directly from foundation Web sites, IRS 990s, annual reports, and other written information. Entries include directory information, e-mail and Web site addresses, assets and expenditures, officers and directors, deadlines, special interests, geographic interests, sample grants, a grant maker description, grant-making priorities, restrictions on type of grant, and application procedures. The priorities section makes detailed analyses of the organizations' funding activities, giving more information than other directories. The publishers emphasize that all information is the author's interpretation of that made available by grant makers. Indexes by broad subject and geographic area complete the volume. Future editions might include more specific financial criteria for inclusion and more up-to-date lists of grants given by some foundations. Useful for any collection supporting Native American programs and studies. J. Drueke University of Nebraska--Lincoln
