Booklist Review

Most homeowners, novice or longtime, find it easier to buy real estate than to furnish it. Two recent British imports, both by relatively accomplished design professionals, attempt to teach even the color challenged how to successfully mix and match hues. Sorrell assumes readers have mastered the fundamentals. What she concentrates on is style--specifically, 25 types, from historically based (medieval, Arts and Crafts, and modernist) to geographically influenced designs, such as Caribbean, French chic, or Russian. Each is accompanied by precise descriptions and color photographs, detailing the specific treatment of colors, lights, fabrics, and accessories, among other things. Taylor chooses a combination of approaches to educate, starting with layouts and planning but concentrating the majority of pages on pretty rooms and styles. Less filled with particulars, this book is about feelings and solutions, such as Shaker simplicity to achieve tranquillity, and modern colors to revive an old-fashioned kitchen. Page after page demonstrates in pictures and a few words how to accomplish different looks. --Barbara Jacobs
