Summary

Summary

Paperback. When the South African Council for Automation and Computation (SACAC) first submitted a bid to host the 8th IFAC Symposium on Automation in Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing in Beijing, many obstacles were evident. Most of these were embodied in negative international attitudes to the government of the Republic of South Africa and the apartheid society it supported. However, it is to the credit of the IFAC working group on automation in mining, mineral and metal processing that their application at that time was considered favourably, although not formally accepted. It took a visit to the 10th IFAC World Congress in Sydney and a visible shift in the political scenario to persuade the relevant IFAC committees that South Africa would be suitable for the symposium.A national organising committee was formed under the leadership of SACAC and the South African Institute of Measurement and Control (SAIMC), the South African Institute of Electr
