School Library Journal Review

Gr 3-5-A solid introduction to the Mexican-American labor leader's life and his efforts to champion the rights of migrant farm workers. Davis's simply written text profiles Chávez's humble beginnings on an Arizona ranch, the poverty he endured throughout his childhood, and his many accomplishments, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, awarded in 1994, following his death. Archival black-and-white photographs document the strikes and boycotts along the road to the inception of the Migrant Farm Workers' Union in 1962. A good choice for reports or independent reading.-Marisa Parish, New York Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
