Summary

Summary

This text tells the story, not only of the Benedictine sisters, but also of all women who stand outside the range of the contemporary imagination. The women featured are from six Benedictine communities - from all generations, cultures and social classes - who share their experiences and struggles.

Library Journal Review

Photographer Brophy and essayist Faulkner journeyed to six Benedictine women's communities, in Germany, England, Brazil, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Colorado. Throughout, they highlight the actions of individual sisters, as well as community issues, choices, and struggles. Both visually and verbally, the authors fulfill the challenge of reconciling opposites, including the secular and the sacred, the monastery and the world, and explore universal needs and hungers. Brophy's photographs reveal a depth of sensitivity while Faulkner catches the essence of the pictures and ably connects them with larger issues. Highly recommended for public and seminary libraries.‘Carolyn M. Craft, Longwood Coll., Farmville, Va. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
