Booklist Review

British authors/gardeners Lloyd and Bird look back in horticultural history to the English cottage garden of the Victorian period. Here in the charming profusion of old-fashioned flowers and in the informal sprawl of plants, they see an inspiration for modern garden landscapes. The authors interpret the cottage garden to include both flowers and vegetables, often in conjunction with one another in the same plot; they also show how to re-create such authentic plantings in a number of examples geared to specific purposes and effects. Appropriate species, garden features and accessories, and general details on garden planning and upkeep are illustrated with a large number of tempting color photographs that evoke the attractions that these garden hold for gardeners, past and present. An appendix gives recipes and instructions for using garden produce and flowers. Index. --John Brosnahan
