Choice Review

The second edition of Stedman's Abbrev. updates the first edition (1992) with 200 more pages and three times the number of entries. The bulk of the book consists of an alphabetical listing of abbreviations or acronyms printed in boldface, with the full unabbreviated terms listed below. How profoundly useful this might be for anyone needing to interpret a journal article's meaning or physicians' notes is demonstrated by "CC," which can be used as shorthand for 68 different terms or concepts, e.g., "cardiac catheterization," "cell culture," "chronic complainer," "with correction (with glasses)." Abbreviations derived from Latin are translated; e.g., the common pharmaceutical instruction "b.i.d." as "twice a day L. Bis in die." Usages are much more common than Gale's more general Acronyms, Initialisms & Abbreviations Dictionary. Belongs in every library serving students or professionals in the health care fields, as well as in every hospital nurses' station. Highly recommended. K. Bradley; Bellevue Community College
