Booklist Review

The downy woodpecker is the smallest North American woodpecker (6.5 inches long) and is most common in the eastern U.S. Ritchison, who has been published in numerous ornithological journals, presents a detailed study of the species' geographic distribution, taxonomy, food and feeding habits, drumming, tapping, vocal communication, behavior (bathing, roosting, and territorial defense), breeding, nest building, egg laying, incubation, nestlings and parenting, fledging and postfledging periods, and relations with humans. There are 150 color photographs to complement the author's lucid text. Amateur bird-watchers, nature lovers, and ornithologists will find the book, the fifth in Stackpole's Wild Bird Guide series, absorbing. (Reviewed March 15, 1999)0811727246George Cohen
