Booklist Review

Steve Allen's foreword crisply sets up a pretty fine book about a rather obscure but engaging showbiz personality. Garner was part of Ted Healy's Stooges troupe after the Howards and Larry Fine split. Though primarily a vaudevillean, Garner worked in movies, radio, and TV, bringing his "finely honed pie-in-the-face talents" to each medium. That Garner is somewhat unremembered now does not obviate the value of his book for collections emphasizing pop culture. Highly detailed and nicely indexed (the latter is much too rare in recent showbiz bios), Garner's chronicle even features a useful bibliography, and face it, it is hard to go wrong with this kind of book when Charles Higham is in the references and Louis Mayer is in the index. Illustrations include reproductions of vintage vaudeville posters and a cast picture from Rhinestone showing Garner with Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton! Talk about your Olympian heights! Old-fashioned fun and informative, too. --Mike Tribby
