Author Notes

Norman Leonard Baker was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 18, 1928. He received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Cornell University and an engineering license at Cooper Union. He served on a Navy destroyer during the Korean War. He worked as a miner and engineer in Alaska, climbed the Matterhorn, lived on a 19th-century schooner that he and his wife had rebuilt, and navigated a 3,275-mile journey across the Atlantic on a papyrus raft captained by the Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl. He wrote several books about his adventures including The Ra Expeditions and Thor Heyerdahl and the Reed Boat Ra written with Barbara Beasley Murphy. He died in an airplane crash on November 22, 2017 at the age of 89.
