Library Journal Review

Art historian de Bonneville (The Book of Fine Linen, Abbeville, 1994) has written a fascinating account of the culture of public and private bathing throughout the world. From the Roman public baths to the modern American model of sanitary convenience, de Bonneville draws upon painting and other cultural arts to create a very readable history that is both fun (e.g., Jayne Mansfield's pink-shag-carpeted bathroom from the 1950s) and informative. The book is luxuriously illustrated with paintings, photographs, catalog pages, and film stills. Although the illustrations greatly enhance the text, artists are not consistently identified in the captions, which diminishes the book's reference value despite the brief chronology, bibliography, and index provided. Nevertheless, for its unusual subject and beautiful design, The Book of the Bath is recommended for larger public and academic libraries.‘Nancy Turner, New Mexico State Univ.
