Featuring 125 images, this volume documents animals ranging in size from the less-than-an-ounce deer mouse to a 200 ton blue whale. It displays the variety of animal life as it has adapted to the major landforms of the USA, from the tundra in the north to the deserts of the Southwest.

Library Journal Review

Over 20 award-winning photographers contributed over 100 spectacular images to nature writer Lewis's text for this very large format book. It is arranged in six chapters, each covering the animals of a particular habitat (forest, mountain, prairie, coast, sea, tundra, and desert). Because so many species are included, the accompanying text is necessarily brief. The captions are, however, informative. The glory of the book is the color photographs‘they are superb, each and every one. The large format makes them all the more enjoyable, from a close-up of a snarling wolf so vivid one can feel his breath to freezing vistas of Dall's sheep on an Alaskan mountain. Still, the high price is discouraging. Recommended for photography collections; an optional choice for natural history collections.‘Nancy J. Moeckel, Miami Univ. Libs., Oxford, OH (c) Copyright 2010.
