School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-8-This workmanlike effort follows the usual pattern of these types of sports biographies: youthful interest in the game with distractions along the way (McGwire wanted to be a professional golfer); successes and failures early in the career; personal setbacks (divorce); and eventual triumphs (the truly astonishing feat of 70 home runs in a single season). Yet, the slugger comes across as a genuinely nice guy, and the 1998 season's batting contest sparked so much interest that this book is sure to be popular. It's unfortunate that there isn't more information about it. Black-and-white photos appear throughout. Source notes are supplied for each chapter. This title has the advantage of being up-to-date, even if it is a little on the dull side.-Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, IL (c) Copyright 2010.
